Tofu? More like To-YUM!

After that beefy bacon bender on Sunday I decided I needed to make a change in my life.  My freaking cholesterol is through the roof and I’m afraid I’m not going to live to see 50 if I don’t get off this all you can eat meat wagon.  It’s over; I’m a vegetarian now.
Grilled Tofu with BBQ Sauce
For my first vegan meal I decided to go all out and grill some tofu with my AlbuKirky Seasonings BBQ Rub.  Going vegetarian doesn’t mean you have to go tasteless.  Let me tell you, nothing kicks up the taste of tofu like my BBQ rub, topped with a little BBQ sauce, it’s truly a meal made in heaven.
Seasoning with AlbuKirky BBQ Rub
Although this was a meatless meal I did not deviate from my tried and true techniques.  I oiled the tofu with a little peanut oil and seasoned liberally.  I fired up the grill and seared both sides of the tofu for 2 minutes on each side on a hot grill.  Then cooked for an additional 3 minutes on each side.  I tried to recreate that crusty sear I used to get on my steaks, but I think it’s going to take some work to get that sear on a brick of tofu.  I know I can do it!
Tofu on the grill
The smell of the seasoning and tofu cooking on the grill was really making me hungry.  I sliced off 3 nice slabs and placed them on a bed of fresh spinach, seasoned with a little more BBQ rub and some of my delicious homemade BBQ sauce.  Let me tell you the silky texture of the tofu, with a spicy kick of the seasoning and the sweet tang of the sauce was truly a palate pleasing combination. Tofu? More like To-YUM!

So that’s it. The days of injecting my veins with the sludge of red meat are behind me now. I’m going to dedicate my grilling skills to creating delicious and appetizing meatless dishes from this day forward.  Hmmm, that case of tempeh burgers at Costco sounds really good.  I’m thinking that birdseed like texture will really hold on to some smoky flavors.
