Weekend Triple Threat, To My Heart.

The Birthday Boy
It was a really long and busy weekend and I’m still tired.  Either I’m really out of shape or I’m just getting old.  Cheryl and I drove down to Las Cruces for a little family get together to celebrate my dad’s 78th birthday.  We had a great weekend of cooking, eating, talking about food and spending time with family and friends.

The big soiree was not until Sunday afternoon, which gave me plenty of time and meals to eat my way through the weekend.  That is pretty much every weekend for me no matter where I am.

This heart-stopping food frenzy started at Heibert’s Fine Foods. Nothing “fine” about it, but the grub tastes crazy good going down.  Heibert’s is famous for their steak fingers and years ago, for their cheesy commercial that used to play at the movie theater.  I can’t explain it well enough to do it justice, but anyone from Cruces knows what I’m talking about. Good steak fingers are hard to come by and these are some of the best, I went with the brown gravy but the green chile and cheese are equally delicious.  What’s not to love about fried meat. Sorry, I don’t have a picture of the steak fingers, I took it with my phone and it was too blurry to post.
Chico’s Tacos
Next on the grease-feast was tacos.  About a year ago, while I was watching the food porn channel, an episode of The Best Thing I Ever Ate was on.  Aaron Sanchez was on the show talking about Chico’s Tacos in El Paso.  Chico’s is an El Paso institution and believe it or not I have never had an order of these tacos.  I spent many an inebriated evening in El Paso / Juarez and how I never had some Chico’s taco at 2:00 AM is nothing short of a miracle.  Cheryl and my sister-in-law, Marilyn, were nice enough to pick up a couple of dozen on their way back from the airport so that I could enjoy this deep-fried delicacy.  These tacos were take out and traveled 50 miles to their destination, which was my belly, but they were really good.  I can’t wait to get an order fresh out of the fryer.
The weekend ended with a feast of tri-tip steak, scalloped potatoes, sautéed mushrooms and Parker house rolls.  Oh, for dessert we had a croissant chocolate chip bread pudding topped with homemade ice cream.  My sister, Diane, Cheryl and I whipped up quite a spread to celebrate my dad’s 78th birthday.  That’s just what happens when foodies and family get together.

We had a great weekend. Cheryl, Diane and I really enjoyed cooking for our family and friends.  The food was spectacular and the time spent with loved ones made it even better. I had a great time scarfing all that greasy food, too.  I have no idea what my cholesterol is, but I cut myself shaving this morning and government cheese oozed out.  Anyone got any good oatmeal recipes???
